Abstract

815,485. Extrusion machines. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 5, 1956 [Dec. 21, 1955], No. 36608/55. Class 87(2). An extrusion machine with a barrel containing one or more screws has at least a portion of the barrel surrounded with a liquid, heating means capable of maintaining the liquid at its boiling point under atmospheric conditions and being positioned so that substantially no heat from the heating means passes directly to the barrel, and means to substantially prevent loss from the machine of the liquid by evaporation. The barrel may be surrounded at one or more separate portions with a liquid, or with liquids having different boiling points which may be arranged so that the boiling points of the liquids ascend from the feed end to the extrusion end of the barrel. If the frictionally generated heat in the extruded material in any portion of the barrel is sufficient to maintain the liquid at its boiling point the heating means may be dispensed with at that portion, causing the liquid to act as a cooling means, additional heating means in direct contact with the barrel may be provided. A barrel 3 has a feed hopper 2, extrusion screw 1, extrusion orifice 4, liquid jackets 5, 6, 7 with heating elements 13, 14, 15 and condensers 10, 11 and 12 fitted with sight glasses and sealing rings 8, 9 separating the liquid jackets. The electrical heating is controlled so that the liquid just boils when viewed through the sight glasses. Specifications 501,478 and 761,953 are referred to.
