Abstract

815,442. Moulding porous synthetic resin battery separators. JUNGFER, L. [trading as AKKUMULATORENFABRIK Dr. L. JUNGFER]. Oct. 4,1956, No. 30319/56. Class 87(2). Porous plates, e.g. battery separators, are moulded by feeding moulds 2 along a conveyer 3, between feed rollers 4 moving more slowly than the conveyer so that the moulds are bunched together beneath a hopper 1, where powdered material e.g. polyvinyl compounds or polycompounds of acrylic or methacrylic acid are fed into the mould. The filled moulds are received by a quickly moving conveyer 5 which separates them and passes them through an oven 6 having four chambers each at a different temperature controlled by a thermostat. The conveyer 5 has holes to allow the underside of the moulds to be heated. The moulds are then fed by a pivoted pawl 31 to a hydraulic press 9. The operation of the pawl 31, (see Fig. 3 not shown) is controlled by a sensing lever 20 which controls an electric motor 21. The press 9 is controlled by a linkage 32 driven by a pin on the lever 31. The press plates are cooled by water flowing therethrough. The moulds are pushed from the press by the succeeding moulds onto a conveyer 10, where the moulded separators are removed from the moulds, the moulds cleaned, and fed onto an elevator 11 which returns them along conveyers 12, 13, 14 and a reversing rocker 15 to the conveyer 3. In a modification the plates may be curved and are slidably guided on the periphery of a drum at the filling station.
