Abstract

Unsymmetrical carbocyanine dyes of the general formula <FORM:0815172/IV (c)/1> wherein R and R1 are substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aralkyl groups, R2 and R3 are alkyl, aryl or hydroxyalkyl groups, V is halogen, n and n1 are 1 or 2 and X is an anion, are prepared by reacting a quaternary salt of a chlorosubstituted 2-methyl benzimidazole with a quaternary salt of a halogen-substituted benzimidazole carrying a 2-(o -anilinovinyl) group. An example is given of the reaction of 1-ethyl-2-(o - anilinovinyl) - 5 : 6 - dichlorobenzimidazole ethyl - p - toluene sulphonate with 1 - ethyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - chlorobenzimidazole ethyl iodide.
