[Also in Group XVII] A machine for forming bags by heat sealing at intervals a longitudinally folded web comprises means to deliver the web at relatively high speed to a series of gripping and sealing means moving at a slower speed, the excess of web delivered forming loops between the gripping means, and means to accelerate the sealed web when released by the gripping means to its initial speed thereby taking up the loops. The arrangement gives additional time for cooling of the seams. A web of heat sealable material 2 is drawn from a roll 1 past folding and straightening means 6, 7 and is fed in doubled form to the combined sealing and gripping means. The latter consist of elongated bars 24, 16 carried respectively on a rotatable assembly 23 and a continuous belt 15, the speed of the bars 16, 24 being less than that of the web feed. The end belt carrying roller 22 has a series of slots which as each comes opposite a slot in a pressure air delivery pipe 27, directs an air blast against the web so that that portion of it immediately behind the last pair of bars 16, 24 to engage it, forms a loop 29<SP>1</SP>. This process may be assisted by the application of vacuum to the space between the bars 24 in which the loop is being formed via a pipe 46. As the next portion of the web is being gripped, the feed is momentarily decelerated by devices 14, 44 engaging the web. Each bar 24 comprises spaced heating elements 32 and a central rubber strip 35 and the bars 16 have heating elements 38 in spaced housings 36. Heat is applied for an initial portion only of the travel of the grippers, cooling taking place over the remainder. Needles 51 cooperate with the strips 35 to give lines of perforations between the bags, the bags being separated along these lines by web accelerating means 55, 58, 56, 57 operated at different speeds. Widths of bags may be varied by varying the initial web speed and thus the size of the loops, or by heating only selected grippers 16. 24.
