Abstract

814,764. Winding yarns. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Oct. 18, 1956 [Dec. 15, 1955], No. 31709/56. Class 120(2) Yarn winding apparatus comprises a base support, a spindle journalled in the support, means for driving the spindle, a yarn collecting tube supporting assembly mounted on the spindle for supporting at least a pair of yarn collecting tubes in endwise relationship and a dual yarn guide 'for simultaneously guiding one yarn of a pair of yarns travelling in side-by-side relationship to one collecting tube and the other yarn to the other collecting tube. In the arrangement shown a pair of yarns A and B pass from drying drum 1 over a dual spring loaded dancing roll or tension guide 3 to a dual traverse guide 12 which has a common guide slot 12<SP>1</SP> and separate guide slots 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, and thence are wound on the tubes 22 and 24. The tubes 22 and 24 are mounted on a drive shaft or spindle 20 by a tube support assembly, and tailing guides 26 and 28 are secured to this assembly and serve to initially form a transfer tail at the base end of each tube. The spindle 20 is journalled in the base support 5 and is driven by gearing from motor 43. The traverse guide is driven from gearing housed in casing 55 which is pivotally mounted at 57 such that the gearing driving the traverse mechanism can be disconnected when desired. For this purpose a handle 61 and a latching assembly 63 for holding the gear casing in or out of engagement is provided. Initially the yarns are led to an aspirator 30 over a guide bar R. They are then separated and passed under the tailing guides 26 and 28. To start the winding the spindle is rotated but the traverse guide drive is disconnected to enable a transfer tail to be wound on the base of each tube. A cutter assembly (Fig. 7) is provided close to the aspirator 30 to cut the yarns A and B loose from the aspirator after they have been snubbed by the tailing guides 26 and 28. The cutter comprises a stationary blade 98 and a rotatable blade 101 which is controlled by an arm 99 operated by pin 107 at the drive end of the tube supporting assembly. The latter comprises two supporting ring assemblies 120 and 121 (Fig. 4) fixed relative to the spindle 20 and housing spring loaded locking pins 129. An elongated sleeve 140 is positioned over the spindle 20 and is provided with holes through which the pins 129 project. Movement of the pins 129 is controlled by expanders 145 and 146 which are loosely positioned on the spindle 20 and are capable of axial movement along the spindle. The expanders are urged to the left in Fig. 4 by a main spring 150 to free the pins 129 outwardly to hold the tubes 22 and 24 and can be moved to the right to release 'the pins by a lever 170 acting on a ring 172 and via pins 176 on collar 175. The expander mechanism is held in the release position by a pin 185 engaging in slot 186 under action of spring arm 186<SP>1</SP>. The pin 185 is released a pin 190 having a tapered end which co-operates with a corresponding surface in the pin 185. When pin 185 is withdrawn from slot 186 the spring 150 automatically moves the expanders to the locking position of the pins 129. The tailing guide 28 is made so that it can be depressed to allow the first tube to be slid over it.
