Abstract

The invention comprises N-d-a -methyl-phenethylamides of the formula C6H5.CH2.CH(CH3).NH.CO.R in which R is hydrogen, HOCH2-, or CH3.CHOH-, and their preparation by reacting d-a -methylphenethylamine with formic, glycolic or lactic acid, or an ester thereof, refluxing the mixture and separating the product. The products are used therapeutically. In examples, d-a -methylphenethylamine is heated with (1) ethyl lactate; (2) lactide; (3) ethyl formate or ethylene diformate; and (4) ethyl glycollate, to form the corresponding lactic, formic or glycollic amides.ALSO:Nervous stimulant pharmaceutical compositions comprise a N-d-a -methylphenylethylamide of formic, lactic or glycolic acid of the formula C6H5.CH2.CH(CH3).NH.CO.R, wherein R is H, -CH2OH or -CH(OH).CH2, and an excipient. The compounds can be administered parenterally, but are more preferably administered orally in combination with a non-toxic edible excipient. Suitable excipients include lactose, sugar, starch, pre-gelatinized starch, gum arabic, gum tragacanth, gum acacia, magnesium stearate, talc and corn starch. An example describes a preparation suitable for tablets or capsules containing N-d-a -methylphenylethyl, lactamide, sugar, starch, gum acacia, talc, magnesium stearate and stearic acid.
