Abstract
814,417. Dish washing machines. SHEPHERD, T. C. R. Oct. 7, 1957 [Oct. 15, 1956], No. 31331/56. Class 138(1). A dish washing machine comprises a receptacle in which the dishes are washed with liquid agitated by an impeller, a waste outlet leading from the receptacle to a comminuting device for solid waste coupled to the impeller drive, and a centrifugally-actuated valve, controlling the flow of water from the receptacle to the comminuting device, which is arranged to be closed on rotation of the impeller. As shown, a quantity of hot water controlled by the valve 27 (Fig. 1) and solenoid 33, operated by timer 34 and switch 29, is fed to the receptacle 5 through pipe 28, and the impeller 15 (Fig. 2) is rotated by the motor 8 and shaft 9 which also causes the weights 21 pivoted at 22 to fly outwards thereby lifting the conical valve member 19 into contact with seat 20 to close the outlet and allow the receptacle to fill with hot water. Solid waste removed from the dishes, settles to the bottom of the receptacle 5, accumulates in the chamber 7 and when the motor 8 is switched off by timer 34 the water drains through chamber 13 and outlet 14 whilst the solid waste is retained on the breakers 10, keyed to shaft 9, and jaws 11 of the comminuting device, so that when the machine is restarted for the second, longer wash, the solid particles are reduced to a small size. Hot water is fed to the receptacle and the motor is started when the second wash is initiated by the timing mechanism, but the water in-flow is allowed to continue and a quantity of water passes through the overflow pipe 23, 24 to the inlet 25 and flushes through the comminuting device thereby removing the treated waste. The motor 8 is stopped, the receptacle is drained and the cycle is repeated to rinse the dishes. In a modification, cold water is supplied to the comminuting device through pipe 39 and valve 37 instead of through overflow pipe 24. The Provisional Specification describes a similar apparatus in which the valve member is a centrifugally operated ball valve and in which the'liquid agitator and valve mechanism may be removed as a single unit from the rest of the apparatus into which it is sealed by a push-fit and states that the invention is also applicable to clothes washing machines and to a liquid agitating machine for industrial or laboratory purposes.
