813,741. Screw and nut gearing. BISHOP, R., JOHNSTON, R. H., and WHITLOCK, G. B. R. May 16, 1955 [May 20, 1954], No. 14863/54. Class 80 (3). In screw and nut gearing in which balls are arranged between complementary helical grooves in the screw and nut members and are adapted to circulate through return passages in one of the members the flanks of the grooves are formed so that the resultant of the forces acting on the balls during operation produces a substantial radial component which acts to move the balls successively into the return passages. In Fig. 1 the groove 3 in one member 1 has a flat base 3a with flanks 3b, 3c at included angles of 105 degrees thereto whilst the groove 4 is of V-form of an angle of 105 degrees. In either direction of relative operation of the screw and nut a radial component of force Rc tends to move the ball 5 radially out of the groove 4 into a return passage in the member 1. The return passage may be provided in either the screw or nut and, as shown in Fig. 7, consists of a deeper portion 6 connecting the ends of substantially one turn of the groove 3 of member 1. Additional turns of the groove 3 may also be utilized with additional return passages. The return path across one turn of a continuous groove in the nut member may be made by inserting a channel-like element in a slot cut through the wall of the nut.
