Abstract

An additive to fuel oils with boiling points between 100-750 DEG F. is formed by reacting a naphthenic acid having a molecular weight up to 300 with an alkylene polyamine represented by R1-NH(RNH)n H wherein R1 is hydrogen or an aliphatic group, preferably having 8 to 18 carbon atoms, R is an alkylene group having 2-3 carbon atoms and n is an integer equal to, or greater than one but preferably from 1 to 4, e.g. diethylene triamine or dipropylene triamine. From 2 to 4 molecular proportions of naphthenic acid can be reacted with 1 molecular proportion of the polyamine when R1 is H or does not contain more than 7 carbon atoms. If the R1 contains at least 8 carbon atoms then the reacting molecular proportions of acid to polyamine should be 1 as to 1. Between 0.005 per cent and 0.05 per cent (by weight) of the soluble reaction product is added to the fuel oil which is a distillate fuel oil including domestic heating fuel oil, jet fuel oil and hydro-refined fuel oil. The naphthenic acids are monocarboxylic acids obtained from crude petroleum with, preferably, an acid number of 200, an average molecular weight between 275 and 300 and with an average of 15-20 carbon atoms per molecule. The alkylene polyamines may be diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, pentaethylene hexamine, propylene diamine, dipropylene triamine, propyl diamine or mixtures thereof.
