Abstract

813,337. Assembling torsional vibration dampers. HAUSHALTER, F. L. March 27, 1957, No. 10054/57. Class 108(3) A torsional vibration damper, Fig. 1, is assembled by positioning body member 10, Fig. 2, up against abutment 19 of shaft 18, clamping the radially inner portion of a rubber ring 24 to the rear face of body member 10 adjacent cylindrical surface 14 by clamping device 20, and pushing forward members 11, supported on flange 22, to engage the free portion of ring 24 and fold it over cylindrical surface 14 as member 11 moves up to abutment 19. During this operation the free portion of ring 24, which is thicker than the space between the two members, is stretched so that it is under considerable tension when enclosed in space 17 and thus holds members 10, 11 together. To facilitate this operation a lubricant which is subsequently absorbed by the rubber is used. To prevent buckling of the rubber ring, which is cut from a flat sheet, the outer edge is notched. Projecting pieces of ring are trimmed off after assembly. A second embodiment is described in which the rubber ring is clamped against the outer member and the inner member is pushed in. In this case no notches are required in the rubber ring. In both the above embodiments a rubber ring moulded with an L-shaped cross-section may be raised. In the method shown in Fig. 6, the inner and outer members 28, 31, are held concentrically with an annular space. 33 between them. A rubber ring 44, which is thicker than half the distance between the inner and outer members, is placed over space 33 and pushed into it by steel ring 43 mounted on cup-shaped members 37. When forced in, ring 44, which is notched round its outer edge, is doubled over on itself. A lubricant is used as before and steel ring 43 may be either removed or left in as desired. Specification 813,336 is referred to.
