Abstract

813,038. Staiths on ships for loading and unloading; endless conveyers. BARTENFELD, W. G. May 4, 1956 [Jan. 24, 1956], No. 13837/56. Classes 78 (1) and 78 (4). Cargo is unloaded from a ship by one or more grabs 34, 35, Fig. 3, carried by a movable framework 12 which can be stationed over a cargo hatch 3, the grabs being movable transversely of the ship and delivering material to a hopper 40 which feeds a conveyer extending longitudinally of the ship and delivering material to a second conveyer which can be moved between a position delivering material from the ship and a stowed position in which it is disposed between the sides of the ship. In the construction illustrated the hopper 40 includes members 42, 43 by which it may be set to feed either of two pan conveyers 44, 45 one of which feeds a belt conveyer 51 on a boom 6 mounted for luffing and slewing as described in Specification 813,037 and the other 44 of which feeds a shuttle conveyer 64. The framework 63 of the shuttle conveyer 64 is carried by rollers 62 (Fig. 5) from tracks 61 so that it can be slid athwartships to extend beyond the side of the ship after which it may be raised by tackle passing round pulleys 66 and 67 or 69 and 70 so that it assumes the inclined position illustrated. Two grabs 34, 35 are suspended from independent hoist trolleys 25, 26 running on rails 24. A single grab and trolley, or more than two grabs, may however be employed. The pan conveyers 44, 45 may be replaced by screws. The framework 12, when not in use, can be housed in an open-fronted cage secured at either the forward or aft end of the tracks 10 for the framework 12 as described in Specification 813,037.
