Abstract
812,915. Making tubes; broaching. TUBE PRODUCTS Ltd. Aug. 2, 1955 [March 18, 1955], No. 7913/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (3). A cutting-head 24 for location within a welded tube to remove flash therefrom, comprises a tool carrier 25 and a reaction member 27 urged radially apart by fluid-pressure-operated means. Strip metal from a roll 16 is trimmed by rolls 18, passes through rolls 19, 20 which form it into a tube, and then has its edges forced together by rolls 22 as the edges are resistance-welded by electrode discs 21 at each side of the joint. Alternatively, the joint is fusion- or inductionwelded. The external flash is removed by a tool 23, and the internal flash by the cutting head 24 anchored at 26 to a bar passing into the tube at a point behind the final forming rolls 20. The tool 35 is gripped in a split portion of the carrier by a bolt 39. A roller 40, grooved to straddle the flash, and a roller 44 to control the depth of cut, guide the tool. The roller 44 is grooved so that its guiding effect is independent of the depth of cut itself, but this roller may be omitted. Pressure fluid enters through the rod and passages 45, 28 to force the tool into the cut. In a modification, the rod is attached to the reaction member. In a further modification, the carrier and reaction member are forced apart by an inflatable bag.
