Abstract
812,445. Degassing metals. DORTMUNDHORDER HUTTENUNION, A. G. Aug. 27, 1956 [Sept. 5, 1955], No. 26172/56. Class 72 An apparatus for degassing liquid metal comprises a heatable vacuum vessel having inlet and outlet pipes of barometric height and in the form of U- shaped siphons. As shown, a vessel K is divided into three chambers 6, 7 and 8. each connected to a vacuum pump and arranged that the pressure decreases from 6 to 8, by partitions 10 which may be cooled. The inlet pipe to chamber 6 has one end formed as a funnel 1 and the other terminating above the bottom of chamber 6. The outlet O from chamber 8 may be provided with a siphon-like overflow A<SP>1</SP> provided with a connection 15 to a suction line. Both pipes E and A are provided with suction chambers 3 to remove any gases from chambers 5 formed in porous bricks 4. Metal poured into the funnel 1 enters chamber 6 where a deoxidant, e.g. carbon, may be added through a device 11, it then passes under the partition into chamber 7 where it may be heated by glow discharge from electrode 13, and finally under partition 10 to chamber 8 from which it flows out through pipe A. The bottoms of the chambers may slope towards the outlets and that of chamber 8 may also be provided with corrugations which produce thin layers of metal. The vacuum lines and pumps may be protected from heat by the devices 12 and by coolers. The inlet and outlet pipes may be heated by separate heaters.
