Abstract

812,414. Telegraph and like poles. GAR WOOD INDUSTRIES Inc. Dec. 6, 1955 [Dec. 24, 1954], No. 34996/55. Class 20(1) A telegraph pole or the like comprises at least one tubular layer of glass fibres disposed longitudinally running the full length of the member and impregnated with a thermosetting resin and at least one layer of cellulosic material impregnated with thermosetting resin or sizing material, one of said layers fitting closely within the other. In use, the pole is closed at its top end by a cap and carries cross arms to support wires. As shown, Fig. 3, two semicylindrical parts of glass fibre impregnated with a plastic containing an epoxy resin, and having complementary flanges 25, enclose a liner 28 made of cardboard or any other cellulosic fibre impregnated with a thermosetting resin, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde. The liner is impregnated with the thermosetting resin and may be heated either before or after it is placed in the impregnated glass fibre tube. Bonding between the two tubes is not necessary. This pole may be provided with a plastic foam core, Fig. 7 (not shown). The flanges 25 may be formed inwardly when the lining will be in two separate semicylindrical halves 43. As shown in Fig. 5, two corrugated halves 45, 49 of glass fibre impregnated with epoxy resin may be provided having outstanding flanges 47, the grooves formed by the corrugations being filled up with cellulosic fibre impregnated with thermosetting resin. This pole may be generally elliptical in section instead of circular. The pole may be made substantially as shown in Fig. 3 but without the flanges, the two halves having bevelled ends which fit together, the liner serving as a form over which the halves are assembled. In a further modification, Fig. 10, the two semi-elliptical resin bonded glass fibre halves 81 are secured together by sealing and reinforcing strips 85 bonded over the joints. This pole may also be circular in section. The pole shown in Fig. 11 has a hollow cylindrical outer casing, a middle casing 101 of cellulosic fibres and a liner of glass fibres all impregnated with resin and may be made by any of the previously mentioned methods or by sliding tubes one within the other.
