812,384. Moulding radar reflectors. ZENITH PLASTICS CO. March, 19, 1956, No. 8495/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VIII and XL(c)] A radio reflector comprises a generally dish shaped structure including a metal layer intimately associated with a rigid cellular backing. In one method of constructing the reflector a mould 10, having a base 11 and an annular flange 14, is coated with an unsaturated polyester resin and a layer of fibreglass cloth impregnated with the resin laid over the convex surface and down to the flange. This layer which provides a protective coating for the finished metal reflector when in use, may be ten thousandths of an inch thick and is then cured. Next the outer surface is sandblasted and a layer of metal (e.g. aluminium) 17 sprayed over it. After this the metallic layer is covered with a further layer of resin impregnated fibreglass 18 and a honeycomb cellular core 19 made of woven fibreglass impregnated with resin, added. To complete the assembly further layers of resin impregnated fibreglass 20 are applied. A porous tube 23, for example a spiral coil spring, is then laid round the flange in the position shown and a flexible bag 21 of polyvinyl acetate placed over the structure and sealed round the edges of the flange 25 as by zinc chromate. Suction is applied to the tube 23 sufficient to cause the structure to be subjected to a pressure of nine pounds. per square inch and the outer surface of the bag brushed, rubbed or rolled to remove air pockets. Whilst the internal pressure is still reduced curing is effected either in an oven or by ultra-violet light. After the curing the reflector is separated from the mould and the bag 12 ; its edges are trimmed and then capped with two layers of resin impregnated fibreglass which are finally cured.
