812,371. Centrifugal pumps. PARKINSON COWAN Ltd., [formerly PARKINSON & COWAN Ltd.]. Sept. 24, 1956 [Sept. 23, 1955], No. 27153/55. Class 110 (1). In a, centrifugal pump dealing with liquids which may contain fibrous material, an arm projects permanently into the eye of the impeller in juxtaposition with the leading edges of the blades, the arrangement being such that when the impeller is rotated, relative movement between the blades and the arm causes fibres lodging on the leading edges to be wiped off and returned to the liquid to pass through the pump. A sheet metal pressing, comprising a ring 20 with lugs 21 which are gripped between the outer surface of the pump inlet 6 and an inlet hose (not shown), has an arm 22 covered with a tube, moulding or coating 18 of butyl rubber or plastic. The tube 18 bears lightly against the leading edges 11 of the impeller blades to wipe off fibres lodging on the leading edges. The pressing may be replaced by a finger-like aluminium alloy diecasting bolted to the inner surface of the inlet 6. In this case, the cover 18 may be omitted, the free end of the casting then lying parallel and close to, but not actually touching, the leading edges 11. The arm may be of resilient metal wire or strip, or a rigid arm may be pivotally mounted and urged by a spring or the like towards the impeller blades.
