Abstract

A synthetic resin composition comprises a halogen-containing vinyl resin, an organic epoxy compound plasticiser, and a minor amount of the cation of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst added as an inorganic salt. The resin may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, a polymer of a chlorinated styrene or a copolymer of vinylidene chloride, a chlorinated styrene or vinyl acetate with vinyl chloride. The epoxy plasticiser may be 1,2-epoxytetradecane, 1,2-epoxyoctadecane, an ester of epoxy stearic acid, glycidyl laurate, 9,10-epoxy-octadecanyl octadecanoate, glycidol, beta-methyl or beta-ethyl glycidol, 1-(2-phenyl phenoxy) propylene oxide-2,3, 1-(2-cyclohexylphenoxy) propylene oxide-2,3, 1-(4-tertiary butyl phenoxy) propylene oxide-2,3, methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, vinyl, allyl, methyl allyl, phenyl, cyclohexyl, or isopropyl glycidyl ether, or a resinous reaction product of resorcinol, catechol hydroquinone, bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) - 2,2 - propane, or 4,41-dihydroxy benzophenone reacted with epichlorhydrin. The inorganic salt may be aluminium, iron, antimony, zinc, tin, titanium, zirconium, beryllium, boron, cadmium or bismuth chloride. Inorganic salts of barium, calcium, strontium, lead or lithium may also be present. The compositions may also contain (a) normal ingredients such as dioctyl phthalate and stearic acid, (b) a polyhydroxy compound such as glycol, glycerol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, glyceryl mono-stearate, or mono-oleate, diethylene glycol, or glyceryl monophenyl ether, (c) an organic sulphide such as bis-(p-amyl phenol), dioctyl or diamyl sulphide, (d) a phosphite ester such as triphenyl, tricresyl, tridimethyl-phenyl, tributyl, trioctyl or tridodecyl phosphite, or (e) a substituted phenol such as 2:6-ditertiary-butyl-3-methyl-phenol.
