Abstract
811,390. Impregnated electric contact brushes. MORGAN CRUCIBLE CO. Ltd. Sept. 21, 1956, No. 28979/56. Class 140. A process for the manufacture of electric current collecting brushes and electric contacts comprises the steps of (i) forming a mixture of powders of graphite and of an electricallyconducting metal and particles of a volatile pore-forming material; (ii) compacting the mixture under pressure; (iii) heat treating the compact to volatilize the pore-forming material and to sinter the porous body; (iv) impregnating the sintered body with an aqueous dispersion of a solid polymerized halogenated ethylene in which all the hydrogen atoms are substituted by halogen; and (v) heating the product to dry and sinter the solid polymerized halogenated ethylene. Specified polymerized halogenated hydrocarbons are polytetrafluoroethylene and polychlorotrifluoroethylene. A suitable metal is copper. Suitable pore-forming materials are urea and ammonium carbonate. The initial mix may be compacted by highpressure in a die or by extrusion. Impregnation of the sintered porous body may be carried out by first subjecting the body to a vacuum to remove air and then impregnating under pressure. In an example, a mixture of copper powder, graphite powder and urea powder is pressed in a mould and then sintered in a reducing atmosphere. The product is vacuumimpregnated with an aqueous dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene and then dried and sintered. The product may then be re-pressed.
