Abstract

810,729. Welding by pressure; upsetting; broaching. KELSEY-HAYES CO. Feb. 7,1956 [Feb. 21, 1955], No. 3824/56. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). In removing flash from a butt-welded joint of a sheet metal blank having flash on both sides, and extending beyond opposite edges of the blank, the flash extending beyond one edge of the blank is displaced to one or both sides of the blank and then the flash at both sides of the blank is cut away by cutters moving toward said one edge from the opposite edge and drawing the flash at the opposite edge by movement of the cutters for removal thereof simultaneously with the flash at opposite sides of the blank. A hooped, flat, sheet metal tyre rim blank has its ends welded by electrodes 1-4, Fig. 2, to produce a joint with flash extending from the sides and edges of the blank. With the blank still clamped by the electrodes, and with the flash still plastic, a V-ended forging hammer 6, Fig. 3, displaces the flash at one edge substantially entirely to the sides of the blank. The hammer is secured to a piston rod 7 having a piston 8 in a cylinder 9 pivoted at 10 to a plate 11 on the stationary welding platen, the cylinder being angularly adjustable by a screw 12 coacting with a spring-pressed plunger 14. With the flash displaced, the blank is removed from the welding machine and the flash on both sides of the blank is removed in a trimmer having cutters 17, 18, Fig. 7, movable across the blank towards the displaced flash. The joint may be between separate pieces.
