Abstract

810,727. Valves. SMITH, E. M. July 22, 1955 [Aug. 2, 1954], No. 21332/55. Class 135. A valve comprises a body with a cylindrical cavity 160 having an end shoulder 164 surrounding an inlet 120a, a resilient split sleeve 105 resting on the shoulder and sealing with the cavity wall, a rotary plug 112 in the sleeve containing a bore 161 leading from the inlet to an aperture in the sleeve, and means enabling the sleeve to rotate with the plug to control the connection between the inlet and an outlet. The rotary cylindrical plug is surrounded by the longitudinally split sleeve having ports coinciding with ports in the plug. The sleeve is carried around by the plug when it is rotated by the ends at the split being inturned at 126, 127 into a slot 124 in the plug. The sleeve also presses sealingly against the wall of the casing bore containing the plug. When fluid flows from the inlet to one of the outlets 120, 121a, fluid seeps between the sleeve and the plug and presses the sleeve sealingly over the outlet not being used. The plug may have an axial bore connected to two right-angled bores, as shown, so that one outlet or the other may be used with a 45‹ rotation of the plug or the plug may have an axial bore and one right-angled bore so that 180‹ rotation is necessary.
