Abstract
810,106. Phonograph recorders. DECCA RECORD CO. Ltd. June 20, 1957, June 20, 1956, No. 19150/56. Class 40 (4). Disc recording apparatus for simultaneously producing both lateral and hill-and-dale recordings in a single groove comprises two coils 12, 30 which constitute the stylus assembly together with supporting arms 15, 16 and a stylus holder 10, the supporting arms being mounted in rubber bushes 17, 18 which permit both torsional and vertical movement of the assembly relative to magnetic pole pieces 21, 22. Hill- and-dale movement of the cutting stylus 11 is determined by coil 13 of which only the horizontal portion lies in the magnetic field, while the lower part of this coil is utilized as a former for coil 12 which determines stylus movement in the lateral direction, the two coils being arranged with mutually perpendicular axes. Feedback coils 24, 31 are also provided which are externally connected to the circuits of the lateral and hill-and-dale recording systems. The feedback coils 24 are operative during lateral movement of the stylus and are provided on extensions 23 of the supporting arms 15, 16, each coil being formed in two parts as shown in Fig. 2 positioned between auxiliary pole pieces 25, 26 of the magnetic system. To avoid coupling between these coils and the hill-and. dale coil 30, the two coils 24 are connected in series opposition and their respective magnetic fields between the auxiliary pole pieces are in opposite directions. Feedback in the hill-anddale direction is effected by a coil 31 of which the horizontal conductors of one coil side only lie between auxiliary pole pieces 32, 33. These pole pieces may also be extensions of the main magnet system or alternatively may be associated with a separate permanent magnet or electromagnet. It is stated that the stylus assembly may be raised to a limited extent relatively to the magnet system so as to disengage the stylus from the recording material.
