Abstract
The surface cracking of a vulcanized natural rubber article due to exposure to the atmosphere and/or to flexing during use is reduced by incorporating in the rubber a beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, or barium salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid. The preferred salt is that of a fatty acid, an olefine monocarboxylic acid, or an aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid, and may consist in a propionate, butyrate, caprylate, laurate, myristate, palmitate, stearate, oleate, lactate or ricinoleate. A strontium salt of a fatty acid containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g. strontium laurate, is preferred. In examples are described the preparation and testing of the resistance to cracking of samples prepared by vulcanizing mixes containing natural rubber and 4 per cent by weight of strontium oleate, 4 per cent strontium ricinoleate, 2 and 4 per cent strontium laurate, 4 per cent barium lactate, and 4 per cent calcium laurate, respectively. According to the Provisional Specification the anti-cracking agent may, alternatively, consist of an alkaline earth metal salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid, e.g. phthalic acid.
