Abstract

809,568. Pneumatic springs. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Nov. 12, 1956 [Dec. 8, 1955], No. 34508/56. Class 108(3) A pneumatic spring for a vehicle suspension comprises a pair of convolutions 24, 25, of flexible inextensible material connected by an intermediate portion 26 having a diameter smaller than the maximum diameter of the convolutions 24, 25, for the normal position of the spring (Fig. 2), the convolutions 24, 25, terminating in annular portions 20, 21, having diameters smaller than the diameter of the intermediate portion 26, and supporting surfaces 30, 31, inclined outwardly away from the annular portions 20, 21. The intermediate portion 26 is surrounded by a pressed steel girdle 28. The material of the spring is formed from two plies of rubberized weftless fabric having cords which extend at an angle of 15 to 30 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the bellows, with the cords of one ply crossing at an angle to the cords of the other. The annular portions 20, 21, terminate in beads reinforced by cores of steel wire. The beads are held between a conical member forming the surface 30 or 31, and a flanged surface 44 of a cup 41 which constitutes reservoir space for the spring. The combined volume of the two cups is 2¢ times the volume of the bellows. In operation, on compression from the normal position, the convolutions 24, 25, tend to telescope into the intermediate portion 26 as shown in the full line part of Fig. 3. On extension, the spring takes the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 3.
