Abstract

809,269. Brake adjustment. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. March 7, 1957 [May 8, 1956], No. 7554/57. Class 103 (1). In an automatic wear adjustment device, which in Fig. 1 is shown applied to a disc brake with the friction pad 7 out of contact with the disc 5, fluid pressure supplied by pipe 16 acts behind the piston 13 and forces it outwardly carrying therewith a second piston 14 slidable inside so as to engage pad 7 with the disc 5. If the pad wear is the maximum normally allowable the sleeve 18 secured to piston 13 will be stopped by abutment with the flange 11 secured to the end of fixed stem 9. At the same time as the sleeve 18 abuts flange 11, a port 19 co-operates with bore 20 in the member 21 to allow fluid to pass to the space behind piston 14 which slides outwardly within piston 13 to complete the brake application. On release of the brake applying fluid pressure, the pistons 13 and 14 move back together under the action of spring 23 so that the clearance is readjusted. Loosening of the nut 24 enables air or liquid to be bled as necessary from the space behind piston 14. U.S.A. Specification 2,392,970 is referred to.
