Class 103(4) A railway car body supported near its ends by bogies comprises normal-level floors 2 adjacent the bogies, a lower compartment with a low-level floor 6 between the bogies, an upper compartment with a high-level floor 7, and central sills 21 conected at their inner ends to vertical columns 24, and longitudinal structures between the centre sills at about the levels of the high-level and low-level floors. The floor 7 has a central aisle 9 leading at the ends to steps 12 for the end vestibules 5. These vestibules are connected to the floor 6 by aisles 11. The columns 24 extend along the outside of and are connected to partition walls 10 each consisting of a framework 27 and shear panels 28. The car body is supported on the bogies by centre plates (not shown) which engage end underframes 20 each comprising a central sill 21 and transverse beams 23. Each underframe is reinforced by a panel 29 which supports the end floor 2. The inner ends of the sills 21 are connected to a centre sill 25 which together with transverse beams 26, supports the floor 6. The car body shown in Fig. 22 has at one end a high-level door 41, at the other end a central staircase 42, middle entrance doors 43 and a middle staircase 44 from floor 6 to floor 7, the staircase cutting into the side of the centre aisle 9. The car wall opposite the staircase is reinforced by a beam 45.
