Abstract

808,241 Steering vehicles. FIAT, S. P. A. Jan. 8, 1957 [Jan. 12, 1956], No. 755/57. Class 79(5) In a motor vehicle having a steering tube 2, 2a situated in front of the front axle and connected with a steering gear box 4 arranged above the vehicle floor, the gear box 4 drives an inclined transmission shaft 9 operating the steering linkage and is secured to a cross member 6 of the vehicle body, the cross member 6 having further secured thereto a supporting member 7 tor the steering tube, and the member 7 being further supported by an upper cross member 8 of the vehicle body adjacent the instrument board (not shown). As shown, a lever 13 keyed to the lower end of the shaft 9 is pivotally connected through a lever 14 to a rocker arm 15, 16 which is rotatable about a pivot 15a carried by a cross member E of the vehicle frame. The rocker arm 15, 16 is coupled through rods 17 to steering arms 18 of the wheels C. In a modification (not shown) the rods 17 are replaced by rods of unequal length directly coupled to the lever 13. The shaft 9 is supported near its lower end by a spherical type bearing (Fig. 4, not shown) in a housing 12. The steering tube, 2, 2a includes a flexible coupling 3.
