Abstract

808,047. Extruding; making cutters for lawn mowers. TORO MANUFACTURING COR. PORATION. Feb. 29, 1956 [March 14, 1955], No. 6382/56. Class 83 (2) and 83 (4). A rotary cutting cylinder with helical flutings 13a, Fig. 3 (not shown) integral therewith for forming the cutting blades, is made by extruding metal through a die 10, Fig. 2, having in its bore helical channels 10a. A mandrel M is used when the extruded product is tubular but is omitted when solid sections are being extruded. The extrusion press, Fig. 1, comprises a container C in which a preheated hollow billet B is inserted and extruded through the die by an extrusion ram R actuated by an hydraulic piston P. The die is supported in position by an hydraulicallyoperated plate LP. A dummy block X is provided on the ram and the mandrel M extends forwardly of the ram and into the die orifice. A support I for the extruded product is slidably mounted on a run-out cable Y. The support contains a freely rotatable member 12 for receiving the extruded product. This member 12 may alternatively be powered by a motor to rotate in synchronism with the twisting of the material extruded from the die. The support I may also be moved longitudinally along the run-out table in synchronism with the speed of extrusion. The cylinder is used as a lawn mower cutter.
