Abstract

807,910. Perforating apparatus. HELL BERG, G. S., and ALFREDEEN, U. A. Oct. 9, 1957 [Oct. 11, 1956], No. 31578/57 Class 31 (2). Apparatus for perforating paper or other material comprises a pattern roller provided with relief-like portions in the form of studs, pins or the like having end surfaces corresponding to the shape of the desired perforation apertures and supporting the material, one or more rotatable pressing tools adapted to compress the material in the places supported by the ends of the studs &c so as to form rupture indications in the material along the edges of the studs &c., means to effect relative movement between the pattern roller and the tool or tools and means for severing the compressed portions of the material along the rupture indications The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a rotatable roller 4 provided with studs 6 about which a paper web 2 is advanced and a rotary pressing tool 8 having projecting ribs 9, cams or the like disposed as shown in Fig. 5 and adapted to bear upon the paper at those portions thereof which bear against the ends of the studs 6 The tool 8 is rotatable in a direction opposed to that of the roller 4 and at a peripheral speed many times greater than that of the roller 4. The edges of the ribs 9 lie on a surface of rotation touching the path of movement of the paper. The end surfaces of the studs are preferably annular. A second pressing tool 15 having ribs 16 similar to the ribs 9 of the tool 8 is preferably provided, the tool 15 being rotatable in the same direction as the pattern roller. The ribs 16 may, however, have cutting edges to remove torn-off lugs 14 left in the material by the action of the tool 8 ; to facilitate the removal of the torn-off lugs, a sloping supporting head 18 is provided in front of each stud 6. The edges of the apertures are smoothed out about the studs 6 by means of a roller 19 provided with a covering 20 of resilient material. The tool 8 or the tool 15 may be formed as a rubber roller having a smooth cylindrical surface in which case the tool may have the same peripheral speed as the roller 4, and the studs 6 may each have a bevelled surface 13, Fig. 4, provided with a cutting edge 21. In a modification, Fig. 6, the pressing tool, which may be cylindrical or conical, is in the form of a rotatable circular disc 24 having radial ribs 26 similar to the ribs 9 of the tool 8.
