Abstract
807,544. Electric tests. BRITISH CENTRAL ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd., and MALKIN, G. C. Jan. 16, 1956 [Oct. 15, 1954], No. 29821/54. Class 37. The secondary of a mains-fed transformer is used as a voltage source for testing appliances for earthing faults and a switch is provided to enable the transformer to test the continuity of both the earth and neutral conductor of the supply mains. As shown, a three-pin plug 16 is connected so that when plugged into a socket pin 13 is earthed and pins 14 and 15 connected to line and neutral respectively. Line and neutral are connected through the reversing switch 19 and switch 24 to the primary of transformer 25. The transformer secondary is connected to a two-way double-pole switch 32 which, in its upper position, connects the transformer secondary through ammeter 31 to the earth pin of a socket 35 in which the appliance to be tested is plugged and the wander lead 39 which is clipped to the frame of the appliance, and in its lower position connects the secondary through ammeter 31 to the line and neutral of the supply. Fuses 30 and an instantaneous thermal trip 42 are provided. In use, when plug 16 is joined to the mains one or other of gas discharge tubes 26, 27 fires. If tube 26 fires the line and neutral connection in plug 16 are connected. If tube 27 fires reversing switch 19 is operated. Switch 24 then connects the supply to the transformer primary. When switch 32 is in its upper position ammeter 31 indicates the current between the frame of the appliance and the earth connection. In the lower position, if there are no faults in the earth and neutral conductors of the supply mains, these two conductors are in series with the transformer secondary and ammeter 31 which may be calibrated in terms of line resistance. The ammeter may be provided with a shunt and a pair of scales or may be calibrated with a number of different scales appropriate to different supply voltages and transformer and meter impedances. A failure in the earth wire will light both lamps 26, 27. Reversing switch 54 enables the reading of the ammeter 31 to be connected for voltages between the earth and neutral by repeating these readings and taking the average. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a different type of reversing switch replaces switch 19 and a single discharge lamp connected between line and earth lights or not according as pins 14, 15 are correctly connected. Specification 543,660 is referred to.
