Abstract

807,155. Making eyelets ; extruding. TUCKER EYELET CO. Ltd., G., and HENSHAW, J. N. Sept. 26, 1955 [Sept. 25, 1954], No. 27746/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in. Group XXV] An eyelet E, Fig. 9, is made pressing a metal pellet 2, Fig. 1, in a die cavity by means of a punch 4 so as to cause rearward flow of metal over the punch to form the barrel 16 and forward flow to form a head flange 20 which is of concavo-convex shape in radial cross-section. The pellet 2 is of light alloy and may be cut from a bar or may be formed by upsetting as disclosed in Specification 728,951. The die cavity is formed between separate die members 8, 10 and the member 8 is raised after formation of the eyelet, Fig. 5 (not shown), to permit the upward ejection thereof after the insertion from below of a new pellet. A web 22 is left between the punch and die and is subsequently removed by punching out. A bead 38, Fig. 9, is formed on the inner edge of the head flange; the amount of metal forming this bead may vary between different eyelets dependent upon the volume of the respective pellets and thereby length variation in the eyelets is minimized. The punch 4 has an undercut tip portion 46, 48 which initially forms the barrel 16 with a tapered wall, Fig. 6 (not shown) but on withdrawal of the punch the barrel is drawn out to substantially uniform wall thickness. The lower end of the punch tip terminates in a scalloped edge 54, Fig. 1, which forms four, five or six scallops 56, Fig. 9, at the tail end of the eyelet. The tail end may alternatively be flat. The head flange of the eyelet is subsequently dipped in celluloid lacquer to provide an ornamental coating. Specifications 737,161 and 737,259, [Group XXV], also are referred to.
