Abstract
806,509. Electromagnetic interrupters. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. May 14, 1957 [May 17, 1956], No. 15330/57. Class 38 (5). A resonance relay in a casing forming part of the magnetic circuit on an insulating plug 11 has two vibratable reeds or tines 39, 40 fixed at one end 36 of a frame 34 supported on a plate 32. A non-magnetic clip 17 on the plug 11 supports a permanent magnet 23 and a coil 26 between plates 27, 28 and a copper damping washer 33. A core member 21 has recesses 20 for prongs 18, 19 of the clip 17 and passes through the magnet 23 near its centre magnetic pole to form a polepiece 41 near the ends of the tines 39, 40 and support the plate 32. The tine 39 carries a contact 44, 45 which, when the tine is vibrated by the A.C. energization of the coil 26 at the resonant frequency, engages a resilient member 46 having one end fixed to an insulated adjustable stud 48 and bearing on an offset cam portion 54 of a further adjustable stud 52. The first stud is used primarily for adjustment of the force between the contacts on engagement and the second stud for adjustment of contact gap. The contacts 45, 46 complete a circuit including plugs 15, clip 17, core 21, plate 32, frame 34, tine 39, stud 48, wire 51 and plug 13. Weights 42, 43 may be adjusted on the tines to set the resonant frequency. The frame 34 is shaped so as to have considerable rigidity in a direction parallel to the flexing plane of the tines, whilst in other planes and in torsion it is relatively flexible. The permanent magnet 23 may be replaced by two magnets having like poles on each side of the core member (Fig. 8, not shown). In Fig. 7, plugs 61, 62 are provided at each end of the casing 60 and the fixed contact is a resilient member 92 fixed at one end to a loop 93 and bearing on the straight end 94 of the loop. The contact gap is set by rotation of a stud 96 on which the loop 93 is mounted and the contact force is set by twisting the loop itself (Fig. 9).
