Abstract

Compositions which together with fillers, pigments, &c. may be ground to give moulding powders consist of an epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent of from 0.1 to 0.8, a novolak resin obtained by condensation of an alkylated or non-alkylated phenol and an aldehyde and having an average number of phenolic hydroxyl groups per mol. of at least 2, and an organic metal compound, e.g. Al, Co, Pb, Sn, Cd salts of higher fatty acids, resin acids, naphthenic acids or salts of tautomeric compounds such as acetyl acetic acid ethyl esters or malonic acid ethyl ester or alcoholates of the above metals. Proportions of 20-300 parts novolak and 1-8 parts organo metallic compounds are specified. Precondensates which can be stored are obtained by heating to 80-220 DEG C. and cooling to below 50 DEG C. before hardening sets in; the precondensates are then finally hardened by heating to 100-250 DEG C. In examples, 100 parts epoxy resin are mixed with 70 parts of a novolac resin and 2 parts of an organo metal compound which may be Cd, Pb, or Al isopropylate. In Example 4 a moulding powder is obtained by mixing on a roller mill, the rolls of which are maintained at 80 DEG and 100 DEG C. respectively, 100 gs. of epoxy and novolac resin, 100 gs. wood flour and 2 gs. cobalt oleate; mixing was continued until the mixture set to a rubber-like mass which was then ground to a powder. Specifications 722,045, 722,145, [Group II], and 729,258 are referred to.
