Abstract

[Also in Group XXIX] An hydraulic speed governor comprises a housing a, a rotary spindle c carried by the housing and having one end extending into a chamber b in the housing and formed with a flange d one side of which acts as a valve seating, and an annular closure member g carried by the shaft and urged toward the seating as the spindle speed increases by centrifugal masses j carried by the spindle, the housing and spindle being provided with passages for a motive liquid which can flow through the space between the seating and closure member and whose pressure is thereby varied by movement of the closure member to or from the seating. The flange d is held in contact with a shoulder e on the housing by a spring f. The closure member g is attached to the spindle by a flexible diaphragm h and the centrifugal masses are secured to a flexible web i carried by the spindle. The motive liquid is supplied through an inlet passage m, having a restriction n, and a port p and bore q in the spindle to the space bounded by the flange d and closure member g whence it can return through drain passage r. A passage s from the passage m conveys the motive liquid to a servo or other mechanism actuated thereby. The governor may be used for regulating the supply of liquid fuel to an engine, the spindle being driven by the engine and the motive liquid being derived from a fuel pump and utilized through a servo mechanism to control the rate of fuel supply.
