805,923. Jointing by stamping. BURNDY ENGINEERING CO. Inc. Dec. 8, 1955 [Dec. 10, 1954], No. 35205/55. Class 83 (4). A fluid-operated crimping tool comprises a cylindrical body and a head having a jaw fixedly mounted thereto, a movable jaw mounted in said head, a piston operable in said cylinder, a valve for admitting fluid pressure to the cylinder, means for releasing the fluid pressure applied to said piston only when the movable jaw has been fully closed and independently of the valve. The tool comprises a cylindrical body 10 and a head 11, the cylinder containing a spring-loaded fluid-operated piston 14 provided with an extension 16 having a cam surface 17. The extension is adjustably attached to the piston and is guided by roller bearings 45 and 46. The head has a nose portion 28 accommodating a stationary crimping die 28A and a reciprocable die 31A mounted on a seat 31 adjustably attached to a plunger 30. A spring-loaded pivoted rocker 34 within the head is operated by a trigger 41 and has rollers 36 and 73 for engaging the piston extension 16 and plunger 30 respectively. A lever handle 49 for controlling the power operation of the tool is pivoted to the head and extends the length of the cylinder 10 and engages a pin 64 in the valve control unit 54 (Fig. 3) situated at the base of the cylinder. The pin operates an adjustably spring-loaded piston 60 to charge the cylinder with compressed air or discharge the cylinder to atmosphere through passages 56 and 55 respectively. An angularly drilled hole 70 allows fluid leakage to escape through the exhaust passage 55 when the valve is fully extended. In operation to crimp a connector, the trigger 41 is depressed to open the dies and allow the connector 75 to be inserted whereupon the trigger is released and the spring-loaded rocker pushing against the plunger 30 clamps the connector between the dies. The conductor is inserted on the connector and the lever 49 is depressed to supply air pressure into the cylinder 10 to raise the piston and the cammed projection 16 which engages the roller 36 on the rocker and applies the necessary force to the plunger 30 to effect the crimping. Release of the lever 49 opens the cylinder to exhaust and allows the piston to return and permit the dies to be opened by the trigger 41. If it is desired to keep the dies in a normally open position and so dispense with the trigger 41, the free end B of the rocker spring 38 is positioned against the spacer 40 as shown in Fig. 2.
