805,810. Shearing. SHAFFER TOOL WORKS. March 25, 1957 [July 23, 1956], No. 9648/57. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXI] In a well fitting comprising a body 10 having a bore 12 for the well string, and ram containing chambers 15 normal to the bore, each of the rams 20, 22, which are semi-circular in plan, carries at its straight edge a shear blade which coacts with the blade on the other ram to sever the well string when the rams close the bore. Each of the rams comprises a holder 26 connected to hydraulically-operated pistons 31, a block 34, and a rubber seal bonded to the block and comprising a semi-circular part 38 having its ends connected to a straight part 39. The ram 20 carries the shear blade 46 and is formed with a recess 50 for reception of the shear blade 63. The blade 63 is mounted on the ram 22 and has a cutting edge 67 projecting from, and at an angle to, the straight edge of the ram. When the edges of the rams are together and the string is sheared, the tension in the string moves the upper part of the string from the rams, and the rubber parts 39 abut to seal off the lower part of the string. The fitting has two further chambers 14 which house rams adapted to close around a string in the bore 12.
