Abstract

805,371. Balancing rotors. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Jan. 11, 1957 [Jan. 16, 1956], No. 1485/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A rotor disc is balanced by means comprising a number of plugs each having a cylindrical portion to engage in one of a number of holes spaced around a circumference of the rotor and a flanged head extending transversely of the axis of the cylindrical portion and arranged to engage in a circumferentially extending groove on the rotor by rotation of the plug about its axis and each plug having a part adapted to co-operate with the rotor to prevent disengagement of the flanged head from the groove. The turbine disc 10 is provided near its periphery with an axial flange 14 from which projects inwardly a radial flange 15. The flange 15 is formed with a large number of drilled holes 16. A projection of the flange 14 beyond the flange 15 is formed with a circumferential groove 17. To balance the rotor some or all of the holes 16 have balancing plugs 18 comprising a cylindrical portion 19 which fits the holes 16 and a head 22, the axial thickness of which fits the groove 17. The head 22 is in the form of a circular flange 22 having two parallel flats 23 machined one on each side. The cylindrical portion 19 is engaged in the hole 16 with the flange 22 in the position shown in chain-dotted lines in Fig. 3, and when the plug is fully home it is rotated through a right-angle to bring the flange 22 into the groove 17. A pair of thin arcuate flanges 24 project from the flanged head 22. The ends of the flanges 24 are deformed to engage the radially inwardly facing surface of flange 14 to lock the plug against rotation. A notch can be provided in the recess provided in the flange 14 to accommodate the flange 24 and the plug locked by deforming the flange into the notch. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the head has only a single flat machined on it. In this case the plug is rotated through 180 degrees after insertion. The plug is locked in position by deforming an end of the flanges 24 to engage a flange on the rotor. The plugs may be of different weights which may be obtained by drilling the centre or by varying the length of the cylindrical portion 19.
