Abstract
804,628. Staircase waveform generators. COLLINS RADIO CO. April 9, 1957 [Sept. 25, 1956], No. 11590/57. Class 40 (6). Fig. 4 shows a staircase waveform generator in which a D.C. voltage of + 100 volts is applied across the network RO, RN, RK and diodes 21 ... 24, 31 ... 34, so that when switches S1 ... S4 are operated according to the time sequence shown in Figs. 2A ... 2D a step waveform as shown in Fig. 5 is generated across resistor RO. A fixed D.C. voltage ER, for example of + 50 volts, is maintained constant by neon 43 and applied between the grid and cathode of cathode follower stages V2, V1 respectively. The voltage ER is thus applied between leads 10 and 11 so that the leads increase in voltage in stepwise pattern the potential of lead 10 being always + 50 volts higher than that of lead 11, the stages V1, V2 being operated at substantially unity gain. When any switch S1 ... S4 is moved from the position shown its respective diodes 21 ... 24, 31 ... 34 are biased to a conducting condition the values of voltage divider resistors RK, RN are chosen so that when all switches are ungrounded the positive voltage provided by the dividers always exceeds the voltage EC from tube V2 so that the diodes always conduct when their respective switches are ungrounded. It is shown that the output voltage EO is equal to Since EO and ER are constant the output voltage is controlled by the values of resistors RN so that to provide the correct current relationship for equal incremental steps of the output voltage EO the value of resistors RN are selected so that any two adjacent resistors have values with a 2: 1 ratio. A decade number of steps in the output voltage may be obtained with four resistors RN by causing the switches to reset to zero after the ninth step. Other switching sequences than the binary ones shown in Figs. 2a, 2d may be used. In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the switches S1 ... S4 are provided by bi-stable trigger circuits 61 ... 64 which are interconnected so as to switch their outputs between the value B + and C -, the trigger circuits are controlled from pulse generator stage 60.
