Abstract

804,271. Metal floors. STOREY (ENGINEERS), Ltd., T. June 14, 1955 [June 10, 1954], No. 17031/54. Class 20(4) Decking, for bridges in which the roadway superstructure is carried by transverse beams 10, Fig. 2, connected to the main girders, not shown, is formed of sheet metal pressings 11 of inverted trough form which are laid side by side and longitudinally of the bridge directly on the beams 10 so that their tops provide a substantially continuous load bearing surface, the sides of members 11 being provided with interengaging keys 15, 16, 17. Each member 11 is in the form of an inverted rectangular trough with inturned edges 12, Fig. 4, strengthened by transverse diaphragms 13 and lightened by holes 14, 14a in the sides of the trough and members 13 respectively. One side wall of member 11 has a key bar 15 and spaced keys 16, whilst the opposite side wall has spaced keys 17, interengagement being effected by vertical and longitudinal movement of one member 11 relative to an adjacent member. The side members 11a, 11b have keys on one side wall only, the other wall having a kerb 21 reinforced by gussets 22. The adjacent members 11, 11a, 11b are connected by tie bolts 23 having nuts 24 and washers 25 bearing against reinforcing plates 26 on the members 11a, 11b Separate abutments may be fixed to the top flanges of the beams 10 to prevent lateral movement of the decking. Members 11 are aligned end to end by a spigot 18 on one member engaging the adjacent member, and cleats 19 and stops 20 engage the beams 10 to prevent longitudinal movement of members 11. Alternatively, stops 20 may be replaced by cleats which are bolted in position and are reversed relatively to cleats 19. The decking members 11 may be in different lengths so that member in adjoining rows 'break joint with one another. An approach ramp is formed from members 110, Fig. 5, similar to members 11 but reinforced at 27 along the inturned edges 12 and having angle bars 28 welded to the side walls and diaphragms 13 to form inverted channels which receive half-round bearings 29 provided, upon plates 30 hooked or clipped to beams 10, upon an intermediate pedestal 32 and upon a nose member 31. In a modification, the keys 15, 16, 17 are bevelled to provide interengaging dovetails. In such an arrangement, the bar 15 may be replaced by a number of separate keys staggered relatively to keys 16 and the chinks between members 11 are filled by notched plates whose teeth enter the gaps between keys 15, 17 to prevent endwise movement. The keys may be pressed 'from the side walls of the members. A footwalk may be provided carried by outrigger brackets bolted to beams 10. According to the Provisional Specification the kerb members may be trough sections which face outwardly.
