Abstract

804,103. Automatic tuning and impedance matching control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 29, 1956 [April 4, 1955], No. 9939/56. Class 38 (4). [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XL (c)] A transmitting antenna is automatically tuned and impedance matched with a transmission line by two servo systems having motors controlled by amplified control signals whose magnitude and polarity are dependent on the error and its sense, and successive reversals of sign of the error signal due to overshoot are used to successively attenuate the control signals. As shown, the antenna tuning is controlled by a shorting bar 7 variably connected between a loading inductance 6 and an earthed container 4 and the impedance of the antenna adjusted by a variable tan 5 on the inductance. Mistuning of the antenna is detected by a reactance circuit X which detects the relative phase between the line voltage derived across shunt circuit 30, 24, 25, 37 and the line current derived from current transformer 22, the two being in phase quadrature, for antenna resonance, at opposite sides of opposed rectifiers 17, 18 due to phase shift networks 28, 29, 35, 31 and 26, 27, 36, 32, and an output dependent on mistuning being derived from capacitor 37 and applied through D.C. amplifier 10 to a servomotor 11 controlling the position of the tuning short 7. Further, each reversal in sign of the output of D.C. amplifier 10 operates a polarized relay 42, 42a energizing a stepping switch 44 so that a wiper 40 is moved one step in turn along a potentiometer resistance 9 at the input of amplifier 10, to reduce the loop gain and motor speed. Similarly, a resistance circuit R with opposed rectifiers 20, 19 measures inequality between the voltages derived from the line and from a tap on the secondary of the current transformer 22, to derive an output to D.C. amplifier 14 controlling through a motor 15 the adjustment of tap 5. Further, each reversal in sign of the output of D.C. amplifier 14 operates a polarized relay 43 energizing a stepping switch 45 to successively step a wiper 41 on resistance 13 so that the input to amplifier 14 is reduced. Manual switches 48, 49 are used to reset the stepping switches 9, 13.
