Abstract
803,986. Magnets. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 23, 1957 [April 26, 1956], No. 12929/57. Class 35. A permanent magnet device similar to that described in Specification 768,518 for supplying variable flux for magnetic filters, chucks and brakes, lifting magnets, &c., and made in two sections 1, 2 comprising soft-iron plates 5, 6 energized by thin magnets 3, 4, is characterized by making the two sections of unequal thickness so that the resultant field 9 may be reduced to zero or reversed by mutual displacement of the sections. In the case of magnetic brakes the sections are annular and concentrically arranged to produce an axial or radial flux to engage an eddy-current disc or drum. The smaller section may be 35-48 per cent of the total length. Specifications 708,127 and 747,724 also are referred to.
