803,065. Making airfoils &c. GLENN L. MARTIN CO. Aug. 20, 1955, No. 24058/55. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group VIII] In a laminated panel comprising a metal core 2 having open-ended cells, e.g. a honeycomb core, sandwiched between and united to two metal sheets 3 and 4, the core is crushed in areas where greater compressive strength is required, before or after its union with the metal sheets. The edges may be compressed to facilitate attachment of the panel to supports, e.g. riveting to a beam 5. Alternatively, the area around a circular opening in the panel may be crushed and reinforced by a metal ring secured by rivets, so that the panel may support a tube passing therethrough. The core may be tapered before crushing, e.g. to form the trailing edge of a thin wing airfoil. In this case the core may be crushed to the shape desired, and the upper and lower skins, constituted by a single metal sheet bent around the tapered edge, united to the core.
