Abstract

802,263. Shaft couplings. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Nov. 10, 1955 [Nov. 22, 1954], No. 33822/54. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups XXIII, XXV and XXVI] Means for locking together two parts 10, 15, Fig. 1, interengaged by screw-threads, comprises a sleeve 21, having a splined or like connection 20 with part 15 and 22 with part 10. The sleeve is retained axially by its abutting part 15 at one end and by a spring ring 25 at the other. Ring 25 resides in a groove 18 in an extension 15a of part 15, the extension ending in axial slots 17 with chamfered ends. To remove the locking means and allow relative turning of the parts, coaxial tools 27, 28 are provided, tool 28 engaging screwed end 24 of the sleeve and tool 27 having prongs 27a which slide along slots 17 to compress ring 25 against shoulder 30 on tool 28. The tools are now withdrawn carrying with them the sleeve and the ring. If it is desired to remove part 15, the tools are withdrawn sufficiently to clear the splined connections and then turned to unscrew the part. Normally, part 15 is rotated by a tool engaging splines 19. As shown, part 15 clamps ball-race 14 on the compressor shaft 10 of a gas-turbine. In another arrangement, shaft parts 40, 41, Fig. 4, are coupled together by splines 42 and are adjustable axially by part 44 threadedly engaging part 40 and having a part-spherical shoulder 46 engaging a corresponding recess in part 41. Parts 40, 44 are locked together by a sleeve 48 having splines or the like 49 engaging slots 50 in part 44 and teeth 51 in part 41. As before, a spring ring 53 locates the sleeve and coaxial tools 54, 58 are provided for removing the ring and sleeve.
