Abstract

802,015. Spanners. HAWTHORNE, W. M. Sept. 28, 1956 [Oct. 5, 1955; Dec. 1, 1955; March 5, 1956] ; Nos. 28310/55, 34371/55 and 6777/56. Class 61. A box spanner for sparking plugs is provided with collapsible lever means which when collapsed bridge at least one end of the spanner and prevent withdrawal of a spare plug located therein. As shown the box spanner 1 has two U-shaped levers 2, 3 of which the open end of the member 2 is pivoted to one end of the spanner at 4 and the member 3 is pivoted to the side arms of the member 2 at 5. In collapsed position the closed end of the member 3 extends across the end of the spanner 1 and is provided with a hole 6 through which the screwed terminal of the spare plug 7 can project, the screw being held in position by the usual thumb nut 9. The outer end of the plug 7 is closed by a cap screw 10. In a modification, two U-shaped levers are both connected at their open ends to one end of the box spanner by a pivot bolt which passes through the spanner. The members may be extended in opposite directions to act as levers or may be collapsed one within the other in longitudinal alignment with the spanner. The terminal end of the spare plug is urged against the closed end of the shorter U-shaped member by resilient means associated with the pivot bolt and adapted to abut the other end of the plug. The U-shaped members may be provided with serrated recesses which provide gripping faces when the members are used in the manner of pliers.
