Abstract

801,048. Ratchet clutches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 23, 1956 [Nov. 29, 1955], No. 35881/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXX] In a machine for operating railway points an over-running clutch 2 is provided between a driving motor 1 and an intermediate gear 4 such that a positive connection between the motor 1 and the points mechanism 5, 6, 7 is only established for normal point throwing movement and remains disconnected for the trailing movement. The clutch may comprise two centrifugal levers 14 moved outwards by rotation of the motor 1 and shaft 11 to engage a dog 18 on a plate 15 connected through a'friction coupling with the gear 3. A second form of clutch, Fig. 5, comprises flyweights 24 moved outwards against springs 25 by centrifugal force to engage a drum 27. A third form of clutch, Fig. 7, has a pivoted pawl 33 moved against the action of springs 36, by acceleration, to engage a toothed wheel 40. Retardation of a plate 41 by inertia assists the engagement of the pawl 33 through the action of a driver pin 43. A control lever 45 may apply a spring 46 to the disc 41 to engage the clutch for manual operation of the points.
