Abstract

800,862. Reversible propellers. MADES, R. July 8, 1955, No. 19797/55. Class 114. [Also in Group XXXIV] In a ship's propeller installation, with feathering blades rotatably mounted in the propeller hub, in which the propeller shaft, provided with a thrust bearing, can be displaced axially between two limiting positions to change the setting of the blades, when the ship has way upon her the displacement is effected by the propeller slip stream acting on the blades in a direction opposite to the movement of the ship. A sleeve-like control head 22 secured against axial movement by a thrust block 24 rotates with an assembly comprising the main shaft 8, the propeller hub 14, 15 and propeller blades 18. An eccentric pin 20, Fig. 4, in a collar 29 at the bottom of the root of the blade is connected by a link 19 to a pin 21 on the control head 22 so that as the hub and blade are moved axially the link turns the blade to alter the pitch, the link in normal ahead working being at right angles to axis of the main shaft. In operation, if the main engine is de-clutched from the main shaft 8 while the ship is moving ahead, her slip stream or wake motion acting on the propeller displaces the main shaft axially and sets the blades to reverse position or ultimately to a feathering setting. When motion is slight or non-existent, a motor 7, preferably controlled from the bridge, acting through worm gearing 6 and screws 5 on the thrust block 24 displaces the shaft. Several forms of roller and ball thrust bearings are described (see Group XXXIV). A gland supplied with oil from a tank 12 above the water line 11 may seal the bearings. The blade which can be turned through 105‹, has a tapered root seated in the hub 14, 15 or a taper between two cylindrical portions. In a modification, as applied to a hollow propeller shaft enclosing a control rod for the variable pitch propeller, the rod is held stationary and the blade turns about a pin thereon. Specification 738,707 and German Specification 457,712 are referred to.
