Abstract
800,780. Making beams. BAAS, E. Aug. 16, 1955, No. 23546/55. Class 83 (2). [Also in Groups XXI and XXX] A hollow beam is made by squeezing a hollow tube from circular to oval cross-section along its length to increase its moment of resistance, and folding the wall inwardly towards the central axis at least in the region of one end, said folding being a maximum at the end and decreasing towards the point of highest stress. The original circular tube may be cylindrical or tapered, Figs. 1, 1a (not shown). The beam 4 may be used as a curved jib for a hoist, Fig. 9, wherein the cross-section at XIV-XIV is oval, Fig. 14 (not shown) ; at the forward end section XI-XI the wall is folded inwardly at 13, Fig. 11, and at the rear end section XVI-XVI, Fig. 16, the wall is folded inwardly at 14 and a bearing bush 15 is welded thereto. The jib is operated by an hydraulic motor 9, 10. In another embodiment, Fig. 17, a pair of beams 4 are used as the arms of a front-end loader and are journalled to a tractor at 23. The beams are cross-braced and are operated by hydraulic motors 24, 25. Modified pivot connections of the hydraulic motors to the beams are described, Figs. 19, 20 (not shown), that of Fig. 20 being adjustable. The loader may alternatively be a rear-end loader.
