Abstract

798,825. Piezo-electric instruments. MURCHIE TRADING CO., Ltd., and FOTHERGILL, L. Aug. 3, 1956 [May 5, 1955], No. 13018/55. Class 40 (4). In a piezo-electric microphone the crystal b3 is secured to a diaphragm a1 or a2 which is mounted in a resilient ring a3, this sub-assembly being mounted in a rigid body c1 carrying a rigid contact e5 which makes rigid contact with one exposed corner of one surface of the crystal b3. The microphone is stated to have a very good low-frequency response and to be particularly useful in stethoxopy. The alternative diaphragms a1, a2 are a contact diaphragm, and a diaphragm for use with a probe, respectively. The crystal unit B, which consists of the crystal b3 cemented between two bars or copper plates b2 and b4, and between two fibre washers b1 and b5 (one corner of the crystal being left exposed), is cemented in the recess of diaphragm a1 or a2. This sub-assembly is then mounted in the rubber ring a3 which is in turn mounted in the larger diameter portion of the aperture in the body c1, the copper foil conductors bc1, bc2 passing through c1 for connection to connecting tabs c2, c3 carried by segment c4. Segment c4 is located in the body c1, contact plate c5 is placed in position, and is secured to the body c1 by screws e1, e2. The back plate d1 and back strap d2 are then secured to contact plate c5 by screws e3, e4. The screw e5 is adjusted to make contact with the exposed corner of crystal b3, thus damping the crystal so that the microphone responds to contact-borne sounds but is relatively insensitive to airborne sounds.
