Abstract

798,812. Making heat exchangers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and MANNING, I. Sept. 26, 1956 [Oct. 14, 1955], No. 29308/55. Class 83 (2). A method of manufacturing a heat exchange apparatus comprises forming into spiral or sinuous shape a roll-bonded element in strip form, having at least one unwelded area extending from one end portion to the other end portion of the strip, adjacent portions of the bent strip being spaced apart by the teeth of at least one metal comb and being secured in that position by then expanding the unwelded area into contact with the teeth. A roll-bonded strip, formed from two sheets of metal having a separation pattern of stop-welded material therebetween and pressure-welded together by passing them through rolls, is coiled into a spiral 1. Two metal combs 3 are arranged crosswise on the spiral 1 with the individual coils in comb slots 4 and the unexpanded stop weld passage within the strip corresponding with recesses 5 in the teeth of the combs. The passage is then expanded either hydraulically or by thermal decomposition of the stop weld material to cause the walls thereof to engage the recesses 5 to secure the spiral 1 to the combs 3. Inlet and outlet connections 6 and 7 are welded to the ends of the passage. The passage may terminate short of the ends of the strip.
