798,769. Cooling foodstuffs; refrigerators. MORRISON, W. L. Dec. 11, 1956 [Feb. 20. 1956], No. 37890/56. Class 29 In chilling perishable material, such as pre-frozen food either wrapped or unwrapped, for storage and transport in an insulated container 1 by a refrigerant fluid, such as liquid air or nitrogen or a cold gas all at atmospheric pressure, the fluid is so distributed within the container that the contents receiving most heat through the walls are chilled to a lower temperature than the rest. As shown in Fig. 4, the upper goods 9 which are subject to most cold loss are separated from the rest 6 by an absorbent mattress 8 and liquid nitrogen is discharged on to them by pipes 11, 12, the nitrogen thereafter passing through mattress 8 to chill contents 6 to a lesser extent. As shown in Fig. 2, the goods around the side walls are subject to greater cold loss than the rest and the refrigerant is caused to flow first and mostly through these goods by a parting sheet 10 covering the central area of the container. In a further form, the interstices between the goods subject to the greatest cold loss are greater than between the rest of the goods so that more refrigerant reaches the former.
