Abstract

798,492. Incinerators. OAKLAND SCAVENGER CO. May 22, 1956, No. 15842/56. Class 51 (1). In an incinerator having a series of stepped travelling gates in a combustion chamber with a correspondingly stepped roof angularly disposed roof portions connect the horizontal parts of the roof with the substantially vertical riser portions, which terminate a substantial distance above the underlying grate to allow combustion products to flow from the lower grates to the upper grates. Refuse from a hopper 33 is delivered by a moving belt 34 down a shoot 36 to the uppermost grate 37 at the rear of the incinerator. The refuse passes down a series of grates 26 to the lowest grate 53, which discharges the residues on to a conveyer 66 constructed of interlocking pans so that moisture does not pass through it. Below each grate 26 is a horizontal row of pivoted overlapping louvres 56, each set of which can be opened by moving a bar 79, Fig. 2, connected by cranks 78 to the shafts 76 carrying the louvres 56. Vertical walls 54 below the grates and louvres 56 collect ash falling through the grates 26, and the ash is periodically dumped on to the conveyer 66 and quenched by sprays 71. Air inlet nozzles 52 at the side of each grate deliver air at different angles so that air is delivered over the entire width of the grate. The sloping parts 29 of the combustion chamber roof slope downwardly at about 45 degrees to break up the layers of hot gases and cause turbulence, and air inlet nozzles 61 in the roof of the chamber increase the turbulence. Gas or oil jets 61a in the front wall 22 of the chamber help to complete combustion, and a baffle wall 38 directs the products away from the shoot 36 to an outlet 62 in the side wall. Each grate 26 is driven by a separate motor, and the conveyer 66 discharges into a hopper 72. In a modification, Fig. 9, not shown, each grate is inclined downwardly at about 15 degrees to the horizontal. Specification 667,572 is referred to.
